Why Rohr invited Alampasu, Yakubu – Alloy Agu

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Alloy Agu has revealed the reasons behind the call-ups of Ventspils’ Dele Alampasu and SKF Sered‘s Matthew Yakubu to the senior national team, the sportsbay.com reports.

It will be recalled that head coach Gernot Rhor invited three young goalkeepers to the Super Eagles team that will prosecute the two friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia respectively next month in Austria.

Maduka Okoye of Sparta Rotterdam also made the cut, but regulars like Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, Heartland’s Ikechukwu Ezenwa and APOEL Nicosia’s Francis Uzoho didn’t make it this time around.

Since the outbreak of coronavirus which forced sporting events to go on break, the NPFL hasn’t been played as the football chiefs decided to end the season like the French authorities did too and it’s has contributed to Ezenwa’s omission due to his lack of professional football for the past 6 months.

Akpeyi is recovering from an injury that kept him out toward the end of the 2019-20 season.

Uzoho just recovered from a cruciate ligament injury and he hasn’t played for APOEL Nicosia since joining the side on a permanent deal in July.

Agu stressed that the invited goalkeepers for the friendlies have been featuring for their clubs.

“In Europe, there have been competitions and games going on, while the NPFL is yet to commence due to the coronavirus,” Agu revealed to Punch.

“Same with the Premier Soccer League in South Africa where Daniel Akpeyi plays, the league has just ended.

“Uzoho as well is just returning to full fitness after a long injury lay off and we are watching him. He still needs some time to get back into shape and we are watching him. Definitely, he is still part of the team.

“Alampasu and Yakubu have been active for their respective teams and that earned them places in the team.”

Nigeria will be playing against Algeria and Tunisia next month in Austria and they next play the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Sierra Leone in November.
