Former Enyimba United defence stalwart, Ifeanyi Anaemena has said he joined Rivers United because he needed a fresh challenge after six successful seasons with the Aba Warriors.
In a chat, Anaemena said he had no issue with his former employers as it was not right for a player to remain in one place for too long in the NPFL.
“I think in football, there is always a time for a player to move. Having contributed my quota to Enyimba by winning two NPFL trophies, I believed it was time for me to move on and face a new challenge in a new environment. It is a good move for me because, in the NPFL, a player is not meant to be stagnant.
“If you are in a club in a long time, regardless of your positive contribution, there would be a time that the way one will be reacted to and this may affect the player. But I had no issue before moving to Rivers United, it was just time for me to move,” he said.
Speaking further, Anaemena said he will help his new team achieve glory with the experience he has garnered over the years.
“Rivers United is one of the teams that is competing for the NPFL title, going to represent the country in continental football. Knowing that they have the ambition to fight for the league and Confederation Cup this season and with my experiences, I have to help the team achieve its goals by going for the trophies,” he said.
He, however, refused to speak on his contract details with Rivers United, saying it remains “undisclosed”.
“My contract details with Rivers United remain undisclosed. So I can’t confirm or deny to you whether I am going to be the highest-paid defender in the NPFL. My contract is personal,” he said.
Meanwhile, it is rumoured that he will be earning N12m monthly as the former Giwa FC defender becomes the highest-paid defender in NPFL.
