Rohr under pressure to drop Ahmed Musa from AFCON qualifiers

Why I invited Ahmed Musa for AFCON qualifiers – Rohr

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has said he invited Ahmed Musa as a captain in the 24-man list released for this month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying battles with the Benin Republic and Lesotho.

In a WhatsApp message, the German tactician said Musa was invited as a captain and won’t be playing the games.

“He is not on the list of 23. He is invited like a captain, not like a player on the list,” he said in message.

It will be recalled that Rohr had been under pressure from different quarters not to invite the former Kano Pillars for the games.

Meanwhile, some ex-internationals have expressed their views on the inclusion of Musa in the list,

According to Mutiu Adepoju, he said the coach should be allowed to do what he wants as he is the one in charge of the team.

“I don’t want to enter that controversy but the coach is the one that knows the usefulness of any player that he calls. He is the one in charge and should know why he is inviting him.

“So, I think we should allow the coach do what he wants to do. He must have reasons to explain why he is invited. When a player is invited, he has his usefulness but I don’t want to say if this is wrong or right. He might be useful as the team’s captain.

In the same vein, Mr Garba Lawal said the coach should be asked the reason for inviting him knowing fully well he is clubless.

“Who am I talk about this? The coach invited him. We should ask Rohr why he invited him. You and I don’t know why he invited him as we know he does not have a club. We need to ask the coach why he picked Ahmed Musa and tell us why to invite a player who has not played football for almost 6 months,” he noted.

Similarly, Dahiru Sadi said he is okay with his inclusion in the list as he may have other roles to play for the coach.

“Maybe the coach has confident in him, maybe the way he arranges the players for him. There are several factors for inviting him as a senior player. Maybe he can organize the team for him,” he stated.

Nigeria, top of the Group E log with eight points (one ahead of Benin Republic and five more than third-placed Sierra Leone), tackle the Squirrels away at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo on Saturday, 27th March and will lock horns with the Crocodiles of Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos three days later.
