We can’t dump Okoye because of one mistake- Amuneke

Super Eagles assistant coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has revealed that Maduka Okoye will be between the sticks ahead of the forthcoming 2022 World Cup qualifying playoff against the Black Stars of Ghana later this month.

Recall that Ghana will host the first leg in Kumasi on March 25 and the reverse fixture will be played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on March 29.

However, with concern over the team’s goalkeeping department, Amuneke in an interview with Brila FM said that the technical crew have so much confidence in Okoye.

“I’m not a goalkeeper trainer, but we have someone in that department, which is Alloy Agu.

“Regardless, Maduka Okoye is a good goalkeeper and human being, so we can’t because of one mistake dump (him).

It will be recalled that former Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, absolved Okoye of the blame for the goal conceded by Nigeria in the round of 16 match of the Africa Cup of Nations against Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

“Nobody should blame Maduka Okoye for the Super Eagles ouster in Cameroun. The shot from the Tunisian striker was strong and fast for him to handle because the Eagles defence line did not shield him well.

“Okoye covered his space well and that was why he had a slight touch on the ball, but his reflexes was not fast enough to stop the ball from going into the net. This can happen to any goalkeeper in the world,” he said then.
