Wada: I regret not playing golf when I was Kogi governor

A former Kogi State governor, Capt Idris Wada (Rtd) has expressed his regrets for not playing golf during his tenure as governor of the Confluence State.

On December 9, 2011, he was elected as the 3rd Governor of Kogi State and sworn in January 2012 but lost his reelection bid in 2015 elections to Yahaya Bello

Speaking to Daily Trust during the awards ceremony of the one day Daily Trust Golf Tournament held at the 18 hole course of the Ibom Icon golf course, Uyo, the retired pilot said the work load and pressure of being a governor prevented him from playing the game.

He also urged current governors and other people who work under pressure to play golf so as to improve their productivity.

“I have been playing golf for over 30 years now. Its a challenging game as you keep working on different aspect of the game to do better.

“Honestly, when I became governor for those five years with campaign and governance, I never played golf for one second. I had so much pressure and work to do that I didn’t have time.

“I regret now and if I have the chance again, I will play golf and work at the same time. They say all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and I urge people who work under pressure like governors to find time to play golf as it will improve their efficiency in governance,” he said.

Wada further threw his weight behind the recent calls for Nigeria to participate in golf at the Olympic Games.

“I strongly support the call. It is a game that anybody can win. The chances for everyone to win are almost equal if you have the basic skills. A country like Nigeria has the chance as we need the investment and encouragement from the government and our people will catapult to the global stage,” he said.

Wada emerged the best male player in the veteran category of the tournament.
