The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has expressed optimism that the 250`Team Lagos’ athletes would perform well at the South West Zonal Eliminations.
Titi Oshodi, LSSC Director, Public Relations Officer, said in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos that the athletes were ready to make the state proud as it hosts the event.
Oshodi said that zonal elimination match would start on Wednesday for qualification ahead of the 20th National Sports Festival scheduled for March in Benin, Edo.
She said that 250 male and female members of the team, representing the state, would participate in nine team sports at the qualifying tournament.
“For the first time in 47 years, Lagos will be hosting the National Sports Festival South West zonal qualifiers for team events,’’ she said.
According to the LSSC spokesperson, the Chairman, Sola Aiyepeku, has also confirmed the state’s redlines to host a memorable competition and ensure athletes qualify for all the nine sports.
She said that Aiyepeku visited the camp to see how the athletes are faring, motivate the team, including coaches and officials with necessary support to excel at the competition.
She said that the chairman assured the team of government support while ensuring that everything in the training camp was working effectively including light and water.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that teams from five other states; Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo, will compete with Team Lagos.
The teams would participate in sports such as Football, Basketball, Cricket, Handball, Hockey, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Rugby and Abula.
Agege Stadium, Teslim Balogun Stadium, National Stadium Surulere, Elegbata Sports Complex, Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval and Rowe Park Sports Centre are the venues hosting the South West Zonal Eliminations.
