NYG: Sports ministry to use national identity card in curbing age cheat

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has stated that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) registration will be used as a requirement for participation in future National Youth Games.

It will be noted that there were widespread reports of age cheating by some states during the just concluded Games held at Ilorin.

During the closing ceremony, Dare had frowned against all forms of age cheat during the competition while stating that NIMC registration will be a requirement going forward.

“I also need to condemn and express my disappointment about the ugly problems of age cheating that reared its head at these games. We will ensure that we adopt more scientific and digital means of identifying age cheats next time and mete out stiff penalties to the offending athletes and States,” the Minister said then.

In order to curb age cheating, the minister said there will be a need for all athletes to have NIMC registration before they can participate henceforth as the database will now require one to input their national identity number before the athlete can be registered successfully.
