The Edo State deputy governor and Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Philip Shaibu on Friday represented his state to play football in the ongoing 20th National Sports Festival.
Shaibu who is also a registered footballer with the state owned Bendel Insurance was introduced into the game in the second half and played a part in the 4-2 victory over Team Borno at the UNIBEN football pitch.
Edo football team finished top of Group A with six points from two matches and progressed to the semi-final of the men’s football competition where they will now take on Team Imo.
Edo had on Wednesday defeated Team FCT in the first group match by 2-1 but needed a win to progress after the team from the Federal Capital secured a convincing 3-1 win over Team Borno on Thursday.
The hosts were on the back foot as the game kicked off with the visitors scoring the first goal of the clash.
With just a minute left to the end of the first half the visitors struck again to take the game level after the first 45 minutes.
Following the resumption of the game, Team Borno were reduced to 10 men as they had a defender sent off for a second bookable offence for a rough tackle with Edo restoring their lead from the resulting freekick.
Five minutes later, the host scored another goal to extend their lead which put the game beyond any doubt.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Shaibu was introduced to the applause of the crowd and was immediately handed the captain’s armband.
His cameo appearance was eventful as he successfully has four dribbles, made three key passes and was fouled on two occasions.
