… we were suspended because we lost to Akwa Utd – Afelokhai, Anaemena
Nigeria Professional Football League club side, Rivers United have suspended indefinitely the duo of goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai and defender Ifeanyi Anaemena.
In a press statement signed by the General Manager, Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, the former Enyimba players were suspended for unethical & unprofessional sportsman conduct.
“The indefinite suspension takes immediate effect pending the outcome of an investigation on the matter,” the statement said.
In an exclusive chats with the players, they claimed they were suspended because they lost 3-0 to Akwa United in a recent league game.
According to Anaemena, he believes there is more to the suspension than the loss to Akwa United.
“I got the news just as you did. You may have to get to the management and ask them. I think because we lost 3-0 that’s why they suspended me and Theophilus. We are not the first team to lose 3-0 and will not be the last.
“But there is more it. Enyimba was not happy we left them and we are playing against them soon. So use your head and know what is happening. They only suspended two of us who are former Enyimba players,” Anaemena said.
In his own submission, Afelokhai said they may have been suspended to miss the Enyimba game while not ruling out their loss to Akwa Utd as a factor.
“They said we lost 3-0. It is possible because we are playing Enyimba, they suspended us. I am not saying that’s the reason but it is possible. God knows the truth and will always set the innocent free.
“What is the reason for the suspension? I have played 14 matches so far and lost only 3, so does that mean I am not doing well,” he said.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the club’s management to find out the unprofessional and unethical sporting conduct done by the players proved abortive as at press time.
