In the delayed Match Day 12 of the 2022/23 abridged Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), defending champions Rivers United defeated Doma United 2-0, thesportsbay.com reports.
At the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, the first ten minutes of the game were played at a frantic pace, with Albert Korvah, Mohammed Shirz, and Joseph Onoja nearly scoring.
With the Pride of Rivers leading 1-0, Nyima Nwangwa scored his fifth league goal of the year in the 19th minute, breaking the scoreless tie with an assist from Onoja Joseph.
The first half ended with a 2-0 score for the home team thanks to a screamer from Albert Korvah in the 43rd minute. The goal was the Liberian’s third in the league.
At the restart of the second half, the Savannah Tigers mounted pressure as they tried to get back into the game with Emmanuel Luke Ogwuche having two quick successive attempt at goal but there was no breakthrough as the game ended 2-0.
The result has put their Super Six hopes in jeopardy as a possible loss or draw in the last game of the season to Abia Warriors who are also chasing a slot will end that dream with Sunshine Stars lurking around as well.
With the victory, United have now gone unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions since that painful defeat to Young Africans in Uyo.
United remain top but have opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table heading into the final game of the season.
For Doma, they remain without a win on the road in the NPFL but stay in third point heading into the last game of the season.
Following this result, Rivers United and Lobi Stars have sealed their Super 6 playoff spots while Doma Utd, Abia Warriors & Sunshine Stars will battle for the remaining slot in Group B.
In Group A, Bendel Insurance have sealed their Super 6 spots while Remo Stars, Enyimba, Akwa Utd slug it out for the remaining two spots.
Meanwhile, the final games of the season will be played on May 21st with the 2022/2023 Championship Super 6 playoffs to be played from Tuesday 23rd May to Saturday 3rd June, 2023 in Lagos as proposed by the Interim Management Company (IMC).
