Rivers United, Plateau United, Kwara United, and Remo Stars continue quest for continental glory

Nigeria’s representatives in the 2022/23 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup will resume their quest for continental glory on Sunday.

In the first leg of the first preliminary round last week, Rivers United, the Nigeria Professional Football League winners, defeated Watanga, a Liberian team, 3-0.

Kenechukwu Augustine, Ebube Duru, and Paul Acquah scored at Port Harcourt’s Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

When the game begins at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia at 5 p.m. Nigerian time on Sunday, Watanga will be under pressure to erase the goals deficit.

The winner over the two legs will clash with holders, Wydad Athletic club for the group stage.

In the same vein, Plateau United secured an away 2-2 draw in the first leg last weekend against Stande Manji in Franceville, Gabon.

Onyebuchi Ifeanyi and Mohammed Zulkifilu scored for the Nigerians and will hope to score more today.

They are to host the same opponent in the second leg today at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja with the winner over the two legs facing former champions Esperance of Tunisia in the next round of the qualifier.

In the Confederation Cup, Remo Stars who had recorded a surprising 1-1 draw in their first-ever appearance in a CAF interclub competition against an experienced Morocco side, Association’s Sports of Forces Armed Royal (ASFAR)

On Sunday, the ‘Ijebu millionaires will attempt to scale the Moroccan hurdle at the Ikenne Stadium, Ogun State and should they progress, they will face the winner of AAGBS of Guinea and Nouakchott CS of Mauritania in the next round.

Kwara United will also seek to consolidate their lead after defeating AS Douanes 3-0 in the first leg last week.

The Afonja Warriors are determined to seal their progress into the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niger Republic.

The winner of this tie will face RS Berkane for a spot in the next round.
