
Rivers United on Sunday advanced into the group stage of the Confederation of African Football Confederations Cup (CAFCC) after a 2-0 win over Etoile Filante de Quagadougou of Burkina Faso at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Both teams battled to a 0-0 draw in the first leg two weeks ago in Burkina Faso.but the Stanley Eguma-led boys scored two late goals to edge the visitors and completed a 2-0 aggregate win over Etoile Filante de Quagadougou.
The home side were awarded three penalties but missed the first two.
The first penalty was awarded in the 18th minute but Edebiri Endurance’s spot-kick was saved by the goalkeeper. Farouk Mohammed also missed the second spot-kick awarded for a handball on 65 minutes.
Midfielder Alex Oyowah however saved the day for Rivers United when he netted the first goal from a cutback in the 89th minute before dispatching the third penalty awarded on the day to seal a deserved win.
The Port Harcourt club are the only Nigerian club who have reached the mini-league rounds of a continental competition this year after Enyimba, Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance failed to do so.
The Pride of Rivers await their group-stage opponents in the draws to be held by the CAF.
