Real Madrid vs Barcelona: El Clasico set to be the world’s first ever $126 billion match

Despite the absence of the world’s most expensive footballer Gareth Bale, the Santiago Bernabéu will still play host to the most expensive match in football history.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar, James Rodriguez … this Saturday’s El Clásico will contain such a sparkling array of talent that it is set to be the first ever $126 billion (£816m) football match.

Despite the absence of the world’s most expensive footballer in Gareth Bale – who will miss the match through injury – market valuations for the likely Real Madrid and Barcelona starting XIs suggest the Santiago Bernabéu will play host to a never before seen wealth of footballing superstars.

Headed by $170m Ronaldo, it is Real Madrid who come out marginally on top in the money stakes, having assembled a first team worth a huge $660m.
