The maiden edition of Ogbomosho Marathon Race which held on Saturday morning saw many athletes participating in the Race with Kareem Ramon emerging the overall winner.
Rahmon Kareem, an indigene of Ogbomosho land won the race with a time of 34:44 .
Speaking after the race, the 20-year Old lad said “I’m happy I won this maiden edition, the guy who came second pushed me to win the race because I had to keep up with his pace.
“In life we have to start from somewhere l, have started well today and I wish to continue to excel in subsequent ones.”
Adetiba Abiodun finished second with a time of 34:35 , while Tunde Adewumi clinched the third position with a time of 35:34. The female category was won by a 17-year Old University of Lagos Human Kinetics student, Mary Ajayi with a time of 43:37.
In her reaction, Ajayi said:” My aim was to win and I’m glad to have achieved it. I wish to compete in subsequent editions to make my state and nation proud”.
The sports Minister who was represented by His Media Aide, Kola Daniel spoke with Pressmen immediately after the event.
“Minister believes very much in grassroots sports and believes in the talents and potentials of our youth in different sports hence this marathon. Though local, the Minister is committed to making it happen every year as a local event. Ogbomoso marathon will signpost other local Marathon so that our grassroots long-distance races can be developed.
“The honourable Minister is committed to bringing back long-distance races and improving our athletics fortunes. In Pankshin as we speak MYSD has opened a camp.
The ace sports journalist went further to acknowledge the fact that event like this will no doubt pave way for young athletes to become world stars.
“There is no better way to discover young and local talents than putting together a magnificent event like this. We witnessed the Lagos, Kaduna marathon race and now Ogbomoso Marathon Race, kudos to the organizers. It can only get better.
“The iron of it all is that Marathon symbolize, the journey of life, a race that involve ups and downs, that might be stormy, curvy, rough or whatever. Winning triumph is the expected goal.
Kola Daniel commended the Sports Minister for sponsoring event like this which serves as an avenue to discover and develop raw talents, and urge the organizers not to relent.
“I want to commend my principal, the Sports Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare who made the event a reality with his financial and material contribution towards the success of the Ogbomosho Marathon Race. Other notable dignitaries in attendance, veteran sports journalist Dare Esan, former Kwara State Director of Sports, Mr. Kazeem and secretary General of Athletics Federation of Nigeria Mr Niyi.
“I want to urge the organizers to build on the success of this event in order to discover and develop more local talents. Kola Daniel concluded.
Former CAF and FIFA Executive Committee member, Dr Amos Adamu, Ag. President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Olamide George, the representative of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Kola Daniel, traditional rulers and other dignitaries graced the event.
