The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare stated that President Mohammadu Buhari’s led administration has pledged unflinching support to Mr Amaju Pinnick’s candidacy at the forthcoming FIFA Executive Committee election scheduled to hold on 12th March, 2021 in Morocco.
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Nebeolisa Anako, made this known during a Press Conference in Abuja to brief the entire nation of Nigeria’s candidacy for the election into FIFA Executive Committee.
He noted that the Ministry and indeed all sports loving Nigerians across the country fully support the intention of the Nigeria Football Federation President, Mr Pinnick to fly Nigeria’s flag in the upcoming FIFA
Dare solicited for the support of all well-meaning Nigerians to rally round him so that Nigeria and Africa can have a strong voice in world football, stressing that his victory would be a collective victory for all.
According to the Minister, ‘’Amaju’s position and connections in CAF and FIFA will help to promote and develop Nigeria and Africa football in all ramifications, while urging Nigerians to be resolute and firm in our support as he clinches FIFA’s exalted offices and be among the best in the world’’.
In his response, the Vice President of the Federation, Mr Shehu Dikko on behalf of the NFF President thanked President Buhari for his unflinching support to football in the country since he assumed office as the President of Nigeria. He emphatically stated that the President through the Ministry of Sports has always given priority to issues involving football across board.
Mr. Dikko said that the FIFA Council is the highest decision making body of football in the world with just 7 elective positions to Africa out of the 37 statutory positions in the council. He added that the election of Mr Pinnick into FIFA Council automatically qualifies him as CAF Executive and will give Nigeria a front roll seat in the decision making of the council.
Also speaking at the Press Conference, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Abu Gumel, described the NFF President’s bid into FIFA Council as a welcome development to Nigeria, adding that the nation and indeed Africa will stand to benefit immensely if elected.
FIFA Council is the highest decision making body in the world with the elections slated to come up in Rabat, Morocco on Friday, 12th March 2021 during the 43rd Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Nigeria will be contesting for a place in the exalted chamber of football’s world governing 37-member council through the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Melvin Pinnick as he aims to be the third Nigerian to occupy that post after the Late Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo and Dr. Amos Adamu.
