Osimhen yet to recover fully from head injury

Super Eagles hit man, Striker Victor Osimhen has been declared unfit for Napoli’s clash against Sassulo having not recovered from the head injury he suffered against Atalanta in February.

Osimhen fell awkwardly after a collision with Atalanta defender Cristian Romero and hit his head on the field, but the Nigeria international was conscious as he was stretchered off and rushed to the hospital.

According to La Repubblica, the Nigerian will not travel with Napoli to the Mapei Stadium, as he still struggles after the head injury he suffered towards the end of the 4-2 defeat to La Dea.

The newspaper says the striker will sit out in the midweek game, where Dries Mertens is expected to continue up front with Lorenzo Insigne and Matteo Politano.

Osimhen was not listed in Napoli’s 2-0 victory against Benevento on Sunday in an Italian Serie A encounter at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The 22-year-old has only scored two goals in 10 Serie A games since his move from Lille last summer, and has struggled with injuries during his first season with the Partenopei.

It will be recalled Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso had appealed to the fans of Osimhen to give him more time to recover and return to his 100 percent fitness and concentration to perform better on the field of play.

The Nigerian has never been himself since passing through much turbulent water and the coach still believes in him to fully return back to his normal condition.

“It’s not easy to be at the top after 94 days off,” the Napoli boss said. “He’s still missing the sprint, his main skill, but he’s progressing gradually. He can do much more.”
