
Female footballers in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) have been promised better welfare by the chairman of the NWFL board, Nkechi Obi.
Obi disclosed this at the official kick-off ceremony of the sixth edition of the Sheroes Cup in Abuja.
She stated that the preseason tournament will help the clubs to prepare for the season.
“This competition has been instrumental in helping clubs prepare for the new season by assessing their players, especially newcomers. It is an excellent platform for private or corporate bodies to showcase their initiatives and support human development efforts.
“In the coming season, the NWFL management will be unveiling a welfare package for players, demonstrating our commitment to the growth of women’s football,” she concluded.
Since the first edition in 2019, it has been described as the biggest preseason tournament for women’s club football in Nigeria.
The opening day was graced by sports dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Nkechi Obi, and Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi, amongst others, making the occasion more colorful.
In the official kick-off of the pre-season tournament Naija Ratels defeated Sunshine Queens 2-1 victory at the Aguiyi Ironsi Military Cantonment.
Edo Queens scored four goals in the first half, with Goodness Osigwe, Suliat Abideen, Omotoke Odueke, and Emem Essien all reaching the back of the net. Seun Fakunle scored the lone goal for Ekiti Queens.
