NPFL round up: Kano Pillars earn valuable victory as Rivers United beat Lobi Stars

Kano Pillars have secured a valuable victory after defeating Wikki Tourist by a lone goal during the remaining fixtures of MatchDay 37 of the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Pillars who needed to win the match to stand a good chance of securing a continental ticket were all over a resolute Wikki Tourist who are equally seeking to remain in the top-flight football next season.

In the 90th minute, Auwalu Ali Malam’s only goal was all that was needed by ‘Mai Gida’ to leapfrog Enyimba and Rivers United to move to third position on the league table.

Similarly, Rivers United 3-1 victory over Lobi Stars was not enough to stay in the top three. The Port Harcourt based side opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Morice Chukwu before Nelson Esor doubled the lead in the 20th minute.

At the restart of the second half, Sunday Adetunji made it 3-0 but Osimaga Duke scored a consolation goal from the spot-kick in the 88th minute as the game 3-1.

Abia Warriors maintain unbeaten run against Heartland

Enyimba dropped down to 5th position after playing out a 1-1 draw against visiting Sunshine Stars who are fighting tooth and nail to avoid relegation.

Emmanuel Ampiah had scored in the 60th minute before Sunshine’s Ejike Uzoechi scored in the 77th minute to make the Aba Warriors fight for a continental slot in the final match of the season on Thursday.

In other games, Kwara United further condemned an already relegated Adamawa United to its 22nd league defeat following a 2-0 victory with goals scored by Michael Ohanu in the 20th minute and Chinedu Nwanzee in the 60th minute from the penalty spot.

Second-placed Nasarawa United also solidified their position with a comprehensive 3-0 drubbing of Enugu Rangers.

Offor Ikenna, Aliyu Abdullahi and Ini Edem were on the scoresheet as Rangers suffered their 12 league defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, the league will be concluded on Thursday though Akwa United have emerged as the champions already.
