NPFL Review: Relentless Rivers United go seven points clear

Following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Remo Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Rivers United reclaimed control of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

With second-placed Plateau United floundering in the title race after a 2-0 loss on Saturday, Stanley Eguma’s side regained control with a nail-biting victory in front of their home crowd. Plateau United have now lost each of their last 4 away matches in the NPFL. They had lost just once in the previous 7 away matches.

Sixteen minutes from time, Kazie Enyinnanya scored the game-winning goal. With nine games remaining, Rivers United leads Plateau United by seven points.

At the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, Shooting Stars and MFM played to a 1-1 draw in a thrilling South West derby clash.

Shooting Stars took the lead through Chidera Ezeh two minutes before the break.

The visitors earned a share of the spoils with Micha Ojodomo scoring the leveller in the 90th minute.

At the Pantami Stadium, hosts Gombe United and Kwara United served up a six-goal thriller.

Abdulazeez Yusuf (brace), Barnabas Daniel and Samaila Bello were on target for the hosts as Gombe United scored 4+ goals in an NPFL for the first time since February 2019.

Jide Fatokun and Junior Lokosa scored for Kwara United.

Defender Etim Matthew scored from the penalty spot six minutes from time as holders Akwa United defeated Niger Tornadoes 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Eight-time champions Enyimba fell to a 1-0 to Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
