
Enugu Rangers’ hopes of staying in the top three of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League table suffered a dent following a shock 2-1 loss away to Niger Tornadoes on Wednesday.
The first leg had ended 4-0 in favour of Rangers but it was an even contest in the early proceedings in Kaduna.
In the 33rd minute, Segun Alebiosu opened the scoring as he beat goalkeeper Mutawakilu from close range from a loose ball in the box.
Spurred by the goal, Niger Tornadoes sought the second goal and came agonisingly close in the 41st minute but Alebiosu aimed his attempt narrowly off target with just Mutawakilu to beat.
At the restart of the second half in the 54th minute, draws Rangers drew level through Kenechukwu Agu and at this point, both teams sought the winning goal.
With the time winding down, Musa Wakili converted from the spot to hand Tornadoes the advantage again after he was felled in the box by Madu.
That goal was enough to secure all three points as Tornadoes moved up to 12th position with 30 points while Rangers dropped to the fourth position with 38 points.
In other matches played, Remo Stars moved to the third position following a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Dakkada FC.
The Gbenga Ogunbote boys have been winless in their last two games and got the lead in the 33rd minute through Tolulope Ojo’s goal.
But six minutes later, Dan Etibo levelled the scoreline as the first half ended 1-1.
Four minutes into the second half, Qudus Akani made it 2-1 before Andy Okpe and Alimi Sikiru completed the rout as the game.
In other matches played, Lobi Stars defeated visiting Gombe United 2-1 while Katsina dimmed Shooting Stars with a 3-1 victory. Abia Warriors was held to a 1-1 draw by hosts, Kwara United.
Meanwhile, Akwa United will on Thursday (tomorrow) host Nasarawa United as Wikki Tourists will be guests at MFM.
Second-placed Plateau United travel to Owerri to battle Heartland as Sunshine Stars will aim to dent Rivers United’s title hopes.
Enyimba FC will seek to return to winning ways when they host Kano Pillars.
