The race for the Nigeria Professional Football League title is getting tight following Nasarawa United emphatic 3-1 victory over Jigawa Golden Stars in the last fixture of MatchDay 31 at the Lafia Township Stadium, Nasarawa State on Monday.
The home side kicked off the game with the aim of reducing table toppers, Akwa United’s lead with Silas Nwankwo in the very first minute had the first real chance after dispossessing Papa Idris but Jigawa’s goalkeeper, Victor Sochima made himself big to deny the striker from close range.
In the 4th minute, the home team were on the attack again when Abdullahi Aliyu made a run past Williams Manji but his delivery from the channel was easily gathered by Sochima.
Nasarawa Utd continued to mount pressure on the visitors while creating and missing several chances with Sochima being put to test severally within the first 16 minutes.
However, in the 17th minute, Jigawa GS had their first chance through forward, Dogara Peter whose long-range effort was well dealt with by Nasarawa United’s keeper, Galadima Mohammed.
In the 19th minute, the home side took the lead after Sochima spilt Chigozie Obasi’s long-range free-kick before Silas Nwankwo turned home the rebound to open the scoring.
Buoyed by the goal, the home side double the lead in the 31st minute through Nwankwo after he picked the top corner after Adamu Hassan sets him up.
Feeling a bit relaxed, the visitors after going down by two goals began to pile pressure but were unable to get the goal in the first half.
At the restart of the second half, Jigawa GS who are seeking to swim out of the relegation water continued with the wave of attacks on their hosts but were profligate in front of goal which they paid for in the 59th minute.
Nasarawa Utd increased their lead when Adamu Hassan with an exquisite finished off a well-drilled pass from Michael Tochukwu to make it 3-0.
However, the hosts conceded a penalty in the 85th minute which was converted by Samuel Stone as the game ended 3-1.
With the conclusion of the MatchDay 31 fixtures, Akwa United still remain top with 57 points with Nasarawa Utd placed second with 55 points while Jigawa GS are 17th with 33 points.
