MFM FC’s hopes of escaping relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) dimmed yesterday after losing 2-1 to Abia Warriors in the rescheduled Match Day 25 fixture in Okigwe on Wednesday.
The Warriors got off to a beautiful start in the 3rd minute after Ikenna Stephen beat three MFM players with a solo run to open the scoring.
Two minutes later, the home side doubled the lead with Kabiru Mohammed’s cross finding Valentine Odoh inside the MFM box who headed in to make it 2-0.
Warriors who in their right needed all maximum points continued to cause problems as they created chances after the lead but couldn’t convert the chances.
MFM got into the game gradually with Alabi Adebayo attempting shots from outside the box which ended in futility.
However, their efforts yielded results when Adebayo pulled one back for MFM after he headed from a goal kick from his goalkeeper, Jerry Isaac who has joined his teammate Folarin Abayomi as the only goalkeepers to give assists in the NPFL.
Both sides failed to score more goals as the game ended 2-1 with MFM losing their 14th league game.
The Olukoya Boys are sitting comfortably at the base of the table with 24 points while the Warriors are 14th with 30 points.
