Madrid fails to bid befitting farewell to Bale

Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid career may have ended on a sour note as Bernabeu failed to bid him proper welfare after the La Liga champions ended the season with a 0-0 game with Real Betis, thesportsbay.com reports.

Prior to the final game of the season, coach Carlo Ancelotti had said it was important Real Madrid recognise the contribution Bale made to the club and called on fans to give him a fitting farewell in his final home game.

But after naming the Welshman in his squad, the Real boss opted not to include him in his 23 that executed the game.

The 32-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of June, has helped the club win four Champions League trophies and scored 106 goals since joining from Tottenham.

The Wales international became one of the most expensive players in the world when he made the move to Spain in 2013 for a remarkable fee of around £91 million.

In addition, as part of a Madrid team that dominated European football, the Welsh forward won two league crowns and four Champions League titles.

Bale, on the other hand, has fought for game time and respect at the capital club in recent years, with the Spanish press labeling him a “parasite” when he missed a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona, only to be fit for an international game a few days later.

Bale has been criticised in Madrid for being perceived to be more committed to playing for Wales than Real.

In March, he hit back at Spanish newspaper Marca for a column which described him as a “parasite”.

Bale was highly critical of the remarks at the time but his agent, Jonathan Barnett, has doubled down on the player’s comments and believes the former Tottenham Hotspur star deserves far more respect.

“Bale deserves a grand farewell from the club. And no, we have not yet decided on the future.” Barnett told Spanish TV station Deportes Cuatro.

He added: “He speaks Spanish. What happens is that people who do not know him say that he does not. Stupid and ignorant people who have not spoken to him. It’s a shame.

“He has always been very happy in Madrid, he arrived as a young man, his children were born in the city, he has donated a lot of money to Spanish hospitals for Covid (a reported £400k) and he loves the city and the club and I think the parasites are the ones who speak ill of him.”

He has played just seven club games in 2021-22 totalling 290 minutes and scored one goal.
