Leadership crisis hits Heartland FC as accountant takes over as interim boss

All seems not to be well in Heartland Football Club of Owerri following the purported takeover of the board by the accountant of the club, Mr Emmanuel Oparanozie, the reports.

It was gathered that the Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Rodney Tony Ajaelu had directed Oparanozie to take charge until a substantive General Manager comes on board.

“I am directed by the Honourable Commissioner for Sports to inform all the drivers of Heartland FC to make sure they take care of their vehicles before they get faulty or they will bear the consequences if they derail,” says Oparanozie said in a memo to the club drivers.

However, the club management has said the commissioner does not have the power to dissolve the board.

According to a statement by the Director of Media and Communications, Solomon Onu, the powers to set up or dissolution of Boards resides with the Governor.

“The number one citizen of our great State, Sen Hope Uzodinma in his magnanimity had directed on 25th day of February 2020 that the Status Quo should remain. Since then, His Excellency have not given a counter directive since February 25th till date.

“The Commissioner did not do his due diligence and fact-finding, thus his actions/purported dissolution was an absolute nullity,” Onu said.

Onu further accused the accountant of being the brain behind the purported dissolution as he was the one who wrote to the commissioner asking him to dissolve the board in a desperate bid to do the bidding of his paymasters.

“The accountant has been involved in clandestine activities aimed at ripping the club off in connivance with some greedy elements who are hell-bent on causing chaos.

“We can also confirm that the accountant raised a payment voucher to the tune of ten million naira to his benefactors without the knowledge of the management,” Onu said.

Heartland were placed 13th on the NPFL log with 32 points from 25 games before the 2019-2020 season was declared concluded due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
