Akwa United’s league title celebrations have been postponed further following a 1-1 draw with IfeanyiUbah FC during the MatchDay 36 of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Nnewi, Anambra.
The league leaders had struggled to get the goal but as a mark of an incoming champion, John Ubong Friday scored in the 77th minute. With the game looking to end in a victory for the away side, IfeanyiUbah’s Uzochukwu Ifejiofor had different ideas as he scored in the 87th minute to delay any form of celebrations by Akwa United.
In the same vein, Sunshine Stars have swam out relegation waters shocked former champions, Plateau Utd in a 3-2 victory at the Akure Township Stadium.
Sadeeq Yusuf Ahmat had put the home side in the lead in the 25th minute before Aliko Bala made it 1-1 just before the first half ended.
At the restart of the second half, Kolade Adeniji made it 2-1 for the hosts in the 61st minute but in the 90th minute, Plateau’s Mohammed Zulkiful scored from the penalty spot, thinking that was enough to get a point from the game.
However, the hearts were broken when few seconds after, Ejike Uzoenyi scored with almost the last kick of the game to earn all three points.
Meanwhile, MFM dramatically shared points with visiting Rivers United following a 2-2 draw at the Agege Stadium.
Nelson Esor and Joseph Onoja had put the visitors ahead in 8th and 80th minute but Imeh Atobasi pulled one back for the Olukoya Boys with a header in the 93rd minute and four minutes later, Michael Mbonu drew MFM level from a rocket of shot.
In other matches, Abia Warriors was the biggest winner for the week following a 5-1 drubbing of already relegated Adamawa United while Dakkada FC did their sister club a favour by drawing 0-0 with second-placed Nasarawa United.
Enugu Rangers defeated Katsina United by a lone goal while the game between Jigawa Golden Stars and Warri Wolves ended 1-1.
Kano Pillars risks missing out on continental spots after losing 0-1 to Kwara United while Lobi Stars and Enyimba played out a 1-1 draw just as Wikki Tourist secured a valuable 4-2 victory over Heartland FC
With two more games to go, Akwa United lead the table with 68 points, 6 more points than Nasarawa United and Enyimba who are both on 62 points.
