In light of Barcelona’s interest, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that they will seek to have their captain, Ilkay Gundogan, have his contract renewed.
The German midfielder was listed on the official Premier League list of players who have been released by clubs and has a contract that is slated to expire at the end of the month.
The treble winners want the Dortmund player to return for the upcoming campaign, therefore they are in talks with him right now.
The Manchester City manager was being questioned about Barcelona’s interest in Gundogan during a press conference at the Emporda golf course in Spain.
His former club are keen on the player, and Guardiola confirms that both parties are in constant contact; however, he said they will fight to ensure they keep their captain.
“We are interested in renewing his contract, and [Barcelona] are also interested,” Guardiola said.
“I hope he stays with us. We are still fighting for him to stay with us. He is a player we want to stay, and we will do all we can, but we know Barca want him.
“If Barça sign him, they will have a spectacular footballer on their hands. I am aware Xavi has called him a lot. If, in the end, he picks Barca, I will tell him he will enjoy himself.”
