Gombe United succumb to Akwa United's early goal

Akwa United defeated Gombe United on Match Day 8 of the 2022/23 abridged Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

Uche Collins put the ball into the net with an assist from James Ajako in the eighth minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Collins tried to make it 2-0 in the 11th minute, but his back-heel pass intended for Moses Effiong was cleared out by a Gombe United defender.

The Promise Keepers, as the hosts are often called, were thwarted by their guests, who were desperate for a second league victory.

All their efforts failed as they fell to a third league loss and are placed 7th with 7 points while Akwa United are 4th with 14 points on Group A table after the 1-0 win.

Meanwhile, Kwara United new coach, Kabiru Dogo berated his team after they were forced to a goalless draw with Remo Stars on Wednesday.

It was his first game in charge of the team after he was appointed few days ago.

Kwara United have won only one of their eight matches in the current season- lost three in the process and drew four with only two goals scored.

According to a statement from the club’s media after the game at their adopted home ground of Lekan Salami Adamasingba Stadium, C Dogo noted that the team played well but will have to improve on their performance.

“The boys gave good account of themselves, even though we would have loved to win this match, especially as we dominated play. We will try to improve on the areas we have identified as problems for the team, especially in the attack” he said.
