NSF 2020: FG yet to pay Edo as sports festival ends

The Edo State Deputy governor and chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has revealed that the Federal Government is yet to fund the 20th National Sports Festival.

It will be recalled that the Edo state last week had threatened to shut down the Festival over the refusal of the FG to support the state with the fund as promised.

However, the Presidency waded into the debacle and promised to credit the account of the state with N500m which didn’t go down well with the Edo state government.

It was gathered then the Shaibu was prevailed upon to accept the money citing non-availability of funds.

“We are yet to get the money from the federal government as they promised. We borrowed money to ensure the Festival holds. We are still waiting for the money,” Shaibu said in a brief chat.

Meanwhile, after twelve days of action, the National Sports Festival hosted by Edo State will today come to an end as Delta State retains its firm grip on sports in Nigeria.

The festival tagged ‘Edo 2020’ had initially been postponed on three different times due to the coronavirus pandemic before April 2 to 14th was picked.

The National Council on Sports had revised the number of sporting events to be staged 38 sports such as Langa, Deaf Athletics, Dambe, Kokowa amongst others.

These sports were held majorly at Samuel Ogbemudia stadium and in about 22 venues in the ancient city of Edo such as University of Benin, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Government Science and Technical College (GSTC) in Benin, among others.
