The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 has rejected the dates picked for the hosting of the 2020 National Sports Festival, tagged “Edo 2020”.
It will be recalled that the festival was initially scheduled to hold in March 2020 but was postponed indefinitely for the first time due to emergence of Covid 19 pandemic.
The Deputy Governor of Edo state, Phillip Shuaibu who is also the Chairman Organising Committee has however kicked against the cancellation of the festival which was scheduled to start on December 5th.
While speaking with newsmen in Edo state, Phillip said; “How can PTF who approved that we can now start contact sports, the same PTF approves opening of NYSC camps across the country.
“The same PTF approves that we can all go to churches and mosques. All the market places are opened and you say we can not hold the National Sports Festival.
“Now, this is sports where we can control the crowd that comes to the stadium,”
“If they are not able to give us green light, it’s definitely going to be impossible to have it this year, I can tell you that because you will need the state to camp their athletes.
“For us in Edo state, our plan was to have our athlete camp for 15 days, and assuming they didn’t give us another date now, 18 days to the festive period it will not be a good time for camping, and other states may want to camp their athletes for one month because they have not been training.
“So this year obviously we should just forget about having the tournament this year, not because we are not ready to host, but because of the logistics issue by the Presidential Task Force,” he said.
Following the lifting of restrictions on contact sports in October, the National Sports Council and the LOC fixed 3-18 December for the commencement of the event subject to approval by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.
It was however gathered that some states had begun camping exercise ahead of the festival.
