The final of the women football game between Team Edo and Team Lagos on Monday ended with violence as fans attacked match officials at the Sports Complex of The University of Benin at the ongoing National Sports Festival, Edo State.
The game turned ugly when aggrieved Lagos fans felt cheated when the fourth official who displayed just an additional one minutes after the 90th minute. Team Edo won the game by a lone goal.
The Lagos fans felt they should have been given more minutes as medical personnel of Team Edo spent about 10 minutes attending to their injured goalkeeper.
Immediately after the final whistle, an argument ensued between players of the two teams with officials from both bench also involved in a heated argument.
With the tension building, police officers stepped in to quell the fight but events took a different turn when a policeman slapped a fan from Lagos who was adjudged to have been the mastermind behind the confrontation.
This led to the exchange of punches from players, officials and fans. Some fans were seen wielding knives, while some wielded all sorts of weapons.
Meanwhile, the Team Edo has clinched the gold medal in the final of the men’s football following a 3-2 victory over Team Lagos.
The team led by the state deputy governor and chairman, Local Organising Committee , Philips Shaibu came from two goals down to beat Lagos with Solomon Osagie scoring the winner from the penalty spot in the 76th minute.
With this victory, Team Edo have now won both the men and female football finals.
