Enyimba slump again as Rivers United gradually etch closer to NPFL title

It has been an indifferent season for Enyimba International after they fell to their 10th league defeat to Shooting Stars in the Match Day 25 fixtures of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

Enyimba lost 2-0 with goals from Moses Omoduemuke in the 14th minute and Lucky Emmanuel in the 40th minute to remain 9th on the table with 35 points, one point less than their hosts who are 7th on the table.

Rivers United have moved a step closer to clinching the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League title following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over visiting Niger Tornadoes in Port Harcourt.

The hosts who have now won 16 games showed they meant business with early attacks on their hosts and their efforts paid off when Rafiu Kayode Isahq opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a brilliant lob over GK Abdullahi following a through-pass from Morice Chukwu.

Three minutes later, Nyima Nwagwa doubled the scoreline after Ishaq’s free kick was saved by GK Abdulahi but the rebound fell to Akuneto who lays the ball onto the path of Nyima to stab home as the first half ended 2-0.

At the restart of the second half, Tornadoes’ Musa Wakili had his side’s first shot on target but it wasn’t enough to beat goalkeeper, Victor Sochima.

As the game was gradually winding up, Konan Ruffin Ngouan compounded Tornadoes’ woes as he scored with a tap-in from a Nelson Esor assist after a beautiful counter-attacking move as Rivers United hold tight to the top position with 55 points.

In Jos, Plateau United continued to mount a serious title challenge against Rivers United after defeating Remo Stars 1-0.

Remo Stars needed the three points to stand a real chance of continental football next season, but after persistent pressure from the home team, Buhari Ibrahim’s towering header from Akila’s cross from the left goes beyond keeper Kayode Bankole for Plateau to lead.

The hosts still remain second with 51 points while Remo Stars are 4th with 40 points.

In the last game of the day, Heartland FC’s attempt to move away from relegation received a little boost as they earned a point from the 0-0 draw played with the hosts, Wikki Tourists.

The Imo based club still remain in the relegation zone but moved up to the 17th position with 25 points having played two more games than Katsina United while Wikki remain 10th with 35 points.

Meanwhile, Nasarawa United will host Dakkada FC tomorrow (Tuesday)while on Wednesday, Kano Pillars host Sunshine Stars and Abia Warriors battle MFM.
