Enyimba have kicked off their 2021 CAF Confederation Cup group campaign with a 2-1 win over Egyptian giants Al-Ahly on Wednesday at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba.
The 8-time Nigerian champions opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Captain Austin Oladapo’s long range with his left-foot effort beat the goalkeeper from just outside the area.
Buoyed by the goal, the two-time African champions laid siege in their opponents half, combining well in possession and retaining the ball well in the final third.
However, they couldn’t create clear-cut chances and looked open without the ball, despite Fatai Osho’s three-person defence set up.
However, in the 18th minute, they conceded from a penalty and Abdallah Imhamed stepped up to make it 1-1.
Enyimba not deterred by the goal conceded, continued to play well and got another goal just before halftime through Victor Mbaoma in the 43rd minute which was enough to seal the victory for the Nigerian giants.
According to records, Enyimba have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 5 consecutive continental matches played on a Wednesday while remaining unbeaten at home in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
Enyimba will, on the next matchday, travel to South Africa to take on Orlando Pirates. Algerian side ES Setif are the other team in Group A.
