Sunday Dare, Minister of Sports and Youth Development, has reaffirmed his objective to have the Super Eagles of Nigeria dominated by players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), thesportsbay.com reports
He added that there are actual intentions to revive Nigerian football’s illustrious history by creating a strong and vibrant domestic league.
The minister made this statement during the PMB Scorecard, a recent event hosted at the National Press Centre, Radio House, Abuja, and sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture for ministers to discuss President Muhammadu Buhari’s accomplishments in several areas from 2015 to 2023.
According to Dare, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) set up the Interim Management Committee (IMC), which is working on the modalities to re-engineer and rebuild the domestic league, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), to regain its lost glory and be on par with international standards.
He declared that it is time to go back to the time when homegrown athletes like Christian Chukwu of Rangers International in Enugu and Segun Odegbami of IICC Shooting Stars in Ibadan served as the core of the country’s previous national team, the Green Eagles.
“We must return to the DNA of our football, the domestic league. The process is ongoing through the NFF and the IMC. The process may be slow but surely it will work out. IMC is working to reengineer and rebuild the domestic league. The Super Eagles must return to the glorious days when it was dominated by local league players like Segun Odegbami from IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Christian Chukwu from Rangers International of Enugu. The Super Eagles will be rebuilt with players with young legs and youthful minds with the commitment to serve.” –
