The minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has eulogized the Team Nigeria U20 athletes for the feat recorded during the just World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
Addressing newsmen during the reception held for the athletes, Dare said the federal government through his ministry will place the athletes on programs that will aid in sustaining the achievement.
“These young athletes have done this country proud, they not only made a statement of intent, they made it emphatically. Like I said we are rebuilding a generation of athletes and these young ones are brilliant stars and the country will embrace, nurture and support them and prepare to unleash them to the world come Paris 2024.
“For the first time in 13 years, we achieved this feat. We see a new future, a new trajectory in our country and the future is bright for athletics in Nigeria. We will reach out to the private sector for the development of sporting infrastructure. We will place on a program to sustain this achievement,” he said.
In the same vein, with three gold medals to her name, Imaobong Nse Uko who was Nigeria’s star performer urged the government to discover more talents like her.
“I will tell to increase the support they are giving us and push other athletes to come up just as I came up. I think we should also improve our facilities and equipment we have here in Nigeria,” she said.
Team Nigeria won a total of seven medals of four gold and three bronze medals to finish third behind hosts Kenya and Finland on the medal table among the 200 competing countries. The next World Athletics U20 Championships holds in Colombia next year.
