The minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has asked the chairman, Local Organising Committee to evict the Team Rivers sports consultant, Sunday Adeleye and Team Edo official, Pepple Young as well as the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Hon Ibrahim Gusau from the National Sports Festival venues.
This was contained in a letter dated April 6th 2021 and signed by Special Assistant to the minister, Mary Onyali.
According to the letter, the minister is extremely disturbed by their presence in Edo and has requested they are immediately removed from all games venue if found.
“Information reaching us in the ministry is that two of the three individuals with questionable characters and in litigation with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and by extension the federal government are present here at the Games under the disguise of state representatives.
“These people have not only undermined the Ministry’s effort at repositioning Athletics in Nigeria they have caused the Athletics Federation of Nigeria lots of havoc over the years till date.
“Our athletics team to the Tokyo Olympics is distracted right now because of their actions , litigation and the manner they ran the affairs of the AFN in the past.
“I have been directed by the Hon Minister to convey that he is extremely disturbed by their presence here. He hereby requests that you use your good office to immediately remove them from the games and strip them of their participatory functions,” the letter stated.
Speaking with Adeleye, he however said he is waiting for the LOC to meet him and others before they decide on the next line of action as he is not Edo as an AFN official but as Team Rivers official.
It will be noted that the AFN and the ministry have been entangled in legal tussle of the leadership of the federation. The courts however declared Gusau president and squashed the purported removal of Adeleye as the AFN technical director.
The ministry not satisfied with the ruling decided to take the case to the Supreme Court.
