Dare adopts sprinter, Enoch Adegoke as adopted athletes increases to 16

The minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has adopted Olympic-bound athlete, Enoch Adegoke as the number of athletes adopted so far increases to 16.

Adegoke, who recently set world-leading time at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria All Comers meet, ran 10.16 seconds in the men’s 100m will get N4.6m as he aims for podium success in Tokyo.

The former junior international competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in both the 100 metres and the 4×100 metres relay and emerging the fastest man at the just concluded 20th National Sports Festival in Edo.

Speaking on Monday when he visited athletes in camp, Dare expressed that the quest to ameliorate athletes suffering prompted him to adopt athlete Enoch Adegoke.

“When we came on board, we found out that most of our athletes are often in dire need of support and they just manage to pay their way, their coaches, pay for their training facilities, we just saw it was a struggle, that is why we come up with an initiative by reaching out to private sectors and today, it is working for us.

“As we speak, we have about 16 athletes adopted and we are happy about that. We don’t pay into proxy account; the money would be paid directly into the athlete’s account to fund his/her preparations for the Olympics,” he said.

While speaking, the delighted Enoch Adegoke thanked the Minister for his kind gesture saying: It’s very timely, it will spur me to strive more, and it’s very good news for me, I am really happy that the Minister did this and I can’t thank him enough.

Meanwhile, the minister Dare has urged athletes to remain focused in unity while on a visit to the athletes in Abuja.

“I have been monitoring your preparations and have met most of you personally. Whether you are Homebased or foreign based, Team Nigeria is one hence we decided to take you to the US to join others so that you can blend as a team”

Dare showered encomium on some athletes, saying the future is bright for Nigeria to have podium performances at the Olympics.

He commended the performance of Tobi Amusan who got adopted few weeks ago and who now has the second World best time, Grace Nwokocha and Enoch Adegoke who got adopted by the Minister under the Adopt an Athlete Initiative.

While emphasizing the importance of Athletes welfare, Mr Dare revealed that the Ministry had put in place a detailed program for the Athletes where every trips, meets, Timing, accommodation is being monitored.

The Minister urged the Athletes not to be distracted “Your job is to run and give this country the best; Focus on your training and the goal ahead and leave the administration to us. The world is waiting to see what you can do,you must meet their expectations”
