Nigerian clubs fall short as Al Ahly dominates African social media scene

The CIES Football Observatory has released a list of the top 100 social media-followed teams in the world, with African powerhouse Al Ahly ranking in the top 20.

Al Ahly, an Egyptian giants has been ranked as the most popular football team on social media in both the world and Africa.

In terms of social media following, Ahly was ranked among the top 20 clubs, and there were no Nigerian clubs among the top 100.

The top 100 also includes clubs from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Argentina, the Netherlands, Mexico, Portugal, Iran, Tanzania, South Africa, Morocco, Colombia, Ecuador, India, the United States, Chile, Russia and Scotland.

The CIES has Egypt’s team at number 14, despite just winning the CAF Champions League for a second time.

This information was found in the most recent edition of the dependable statistics media outlet, which concentrated on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok in its report.

Al Ahly finished 14th in the globe and first in Africa with 44.8 million followers across the four platforms.

The Champions League champions have 16.4 million followers on Twitter and Facebook, along with 9.4 million followers on Instagram, according to a detailed breakdown.

With only 3.4 million users, Ahly’s TikTok has the fewest followers.

Morocco’s Raja Athletic is the second-most popular brand on the continent, with 10.2 million followers across all platforms.

With 8.4 million fans, Simba SC of Tanzania is third, followed by South African teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with 7.8 and 5.7 million fans, respectively.

Meanwhile, with 362 million followers, Real Madrid is ahead its big rival Barcelona (342 million). Manchester United is the only other club with more than 200 million followers, while Paris St-Germain ranks fourth (187 million).
