Chukwu's lone strike secures Rivers United's Super 6 ticket

Rivers United went to the top of Group B after defeating Sunshine Stars 1-0 in the rescheduled Match Day 12 of the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League on Monday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Pride of Rivers made it back-to-back victories in the league, and Morice Chukwu was the game’s hero by scoring the game’s deciding goal in the first half to give the holders a vital victory.

The visitors’ prospects of finishing in the top three while suffering their first loss to the hosts since August 2021 were also harmed by the hard-fought triumph.

Following a heartbreaking loss in the CAF Confederation Cup, Stanley Eguma and his team decided to focus on league play.

Due to their participation in continental football, which left them with a backlog of games, the Pride of Rivers are now forced to play catch-up as the NPFL approaches its final round.

The defending champions were able to clinch a position in the Super 6 playoffs with their victory over Sunshine.

With both teams in Group B sitting at 30 points, United has now earned seven of a possible nine points, moving ahead of Lobi Stars in the standings.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) in Port Harcourt has announced that Rivers United would host Doma United in the rescheduled Match Day 16 on May 18, 2023. Doma United, the league’s surprise team, has enjoyed an amazing inaugural season in the NPFL.

Doma United is hoping to secure one of the tickets to the Super Six as they are currently third with 26 points.

Meanwhile, the final round of games will be played on Sunday May 21 while the Super Six competition that will determine the league winner as well as the clubs that will represent the country in CAF competitions will take place on Tuesday, May 23 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
