Car racing sport in Nigeria may have gotten a big boost following the declaration by the promoter of MotorSport, Adeoye Ojuoko to showcase the sport ahead of the 2020 New Yam Festival in Ilara Imokin, Ondo State, the sportsbay.com reports.
The New Yam festival is set to hold on September 29, 2020, with the car racing sport expected to glamour and fun to the festival.
It will be noted that as part of measures to develop and promote Auto Sports in the country, the Federal Capital Territory Chairman of the sport, Mr Adekola Olamilekan has said that the sport will enhance discipline among youths.
“We are building a growing interest and fan base for the Motorsport around the county, especially in the serene Ilara-Imokin community that has played host to a number of our events in the last three years.
“This community has hosted on-road and off-road races with top race drivers across the country attending, which culminated in our building the first off-road track at Elizade Smokin Hills Resort in Ondo state, and has been attested to be one of the most challenging in the country,” he said.
He said that the presence of top motorsports racers in Ilara-Imokin was a way of showing support for the local New Yam Festival tagged ‘Ijeshu Festival’,
“Our long term plan incorporates this sort of partnerships, and Ilara-Mokin having been a great host to our activities deserve to earn our partnership”
Drivers from last year’s premium event were all on hand for an exhibition race- Kingsley Uwatse, the jeep ambassador on the track, and Antonio Sandouk, 2017 Winner of the on-road race were all on hand to light up the community.
The MotorSport Raceway, which has a total of 11 bends on a 2.3KM, offers lovers of car race the chance to live their passion for car race tracks.
Measuring over 130 acres of land, the race track is equipped with a tyre centre, a fuel station with self-service pumps, a restaurant, a clubhouse and a swimming pool.
The first organised car racing in Nigeria was in the late ‘70s. It was called the Argungu Motor Rally, and as the name suggests, it was held during the famous Argungu Fishing Festival but has been stopped ever since.
The Nigeria Road-X Championship is the biggest motor racing event in the country. The 2019 edition took place at the Motorsport Raceway in Edo state. The event attracted thousands of spectators.
