CAF confirms Akwa Utd, Rivers Utd, Enyimba, Bayelsa Utd for continental clashes

Africa’s football governing body, Confederation of Africa Football, CAF has released the list of 54 clubs confirmed to participate in the 2021/22 CAF club competitions.

In a statement on the CAF website, Nigeria Professional Football League winners, Akwa United and Rivers United will participate in the Champions League while Enyimba International FC and Bayelsa United will be involved in the Confederation Cup.

It will be noted that Akwa United, Rivers United qualified for the Champions League after finishing the just concluded NPFL season in the first and second position while Enyimba picked the Confederations Cup ticket after finishing the season in the 3rd place.

Bayelsa United, a side from the second division will play in the Confederation Cup following their triumph as the Aiteo Cup winners.

CAF confirmed the four clubs’ participation in the Interclub Competitions on Thursday ahead of the draw taking place tomorrow in Cairo.

“54 clubs have committed to participate in the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League, while 51 clubs have registered for the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup,” CAF said on its website.

CAF added that different clubs have until August 15 to register their players on CAF CMS (content management system).

According to the schedule, the preliminary round will begin with the first leg on September 10 to 12 while the second leg will take place from 17th to 19th September.

The first round will start from 15th to 17th October with the return legs taking place from 22nd to 24th October.

After the conclusion of the preliminary and first round phases, the group stage will kick off between February and April 2022.

There are 41 clubs for the CAF Champions League while 39 clubs will battle for honours in the Confed Cup
