… they are wild allegations – Orbih
The chairman caretaker committee, Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Francis Orbih has been accused of manipulative tendencies towards the federation elections through secret registration of badminton players and coaches on-line.
Orbih was also accused of mismanagement of funds including a N190 million donation by the Rivers State government while displaying a lack of transparency and accountability for over 4 years of his rule over BFN
The allegations were contained in a petition from Concerned Badminton Stakeholders in Nigeria and signed by Mr. Kenneth Aguine, a former Badminton international was addressed to the minister of sports and youth development, Mr Sunday Dare and copied to the Senate and House of Representatives committees on sports and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“All monies released by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMOY&SD) and other corporate sponsors were not brought to the knowledge of the Board for deliberations and approval as required and clearly stated in the “National Sports Federations Code of Governance 2017” issued by the same Ministry to guide the administrative and financial operations of the Federations.
“Section 4.6.5 is expected to provide all financial statement of income and expenditure to the Board through the Secretary but unfortunately throughout the over 4 years of Mr Orbih’s tenure the Board was in the dark of what transpired financially between the former President and the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the Rivers State Government in the Sponsorships of Badminton competitions,” the petition stated.
Reacting to the petition, Orbih said he was shocked that people could go low because of the upcoming federations elections.
“I really don’t want to dwell on it. They reported me to the EFCC and even the minister. Its very obvious that it is because of the elections.
“I didn’t know people can go that low because of elections. It is crazy. They are wild allegations against me and they hold no substance at all,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chairman of FCT Badminton Association, Mr. Gabriel Gbayan has joined the race to run for the position of presidency.
He also revealed that his operational strategy will be engagement, integration and collaboration to achieve the dream of the founding fathers of the game of badminton.
The FCT chairman further noted that, “I want a less rancour arrangement that every stakeholder will be considered to achieve our objectives of improving this game in all its facets.”
