Akwa United thrash Heartland to top NPFL table

Akwa United have displaced Kano Pillars from the top position on the table following a convincing 3-1 victory over Heartland in the Match Day 26 of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Thursday.

The Nest of Champions erupted into joy when Charles Atshimene opened the scoring in the 3rd minute to give the host, Akwa United the early lead. In the 24th minute, Charles scored his second goal of the game as his side aimed to hold tight on the top spot. However, a minute later, Heartland’s Akuneto Chijioke reduced the deficit as the first half ended 2-1.

In the 73rd minute, John Ubong Friday sealed all three points as Akwa United secured its 13th league win of the season with 49 points.

Meanwhile, Heartland remain in the 11th position with 9 wins, 8 draws and 9 losses to earn 35 points.

In the other match of the day, MFM FC failed to defeat visiting Abia Warriors as the game ended 0-0 at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

The Olukoya Boys are 10th on the log with 36 points while Abia Warriors are 13th with 32 points.

Meanwhile, hostilities continue on Sunday as relegation threatened Adamawa United welcome high flying Rivers United while Sunshine Stars take a trip to Enugu.

Abia Warriors will seek to return to winning ways when they host Lobi Stars while Heartland hopes to dim Jigawa Golden Stars.

Second placed Kano Pillars will play host to Akwa United while Enyimba will be guest to Katsina United.

MFM FC will travel down to Ilorin to battle Kwara United while Nasarawa United will seek to test their might against Plateau United.

Warri Wolves will welcome Dakkada while Wikki Tourist play host Ifeanyi Uba
