Akwa Utd open six-point gap as Nasarawa, Pillars falter away

Table-toppers, Akwa United has opened a massive six-point lead following an emphatic 3-0 win over Warri Wolves in Match Day 34 of the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League on Wednesday.

The Uyo based club who are hunting for their first-ever league title got off to a flying start in the 7th minute through Charles Atshimene who converted his spot-kick expertly at the Nest of Champions.

In the 25th minute, John Ubong Friday doubled the lead to give his home side a commanding lead as the first half ended 2-0.

At the restart of the second half, the home side made it 3-0 in the 58th minute when Atshimene scored his double for the game.

Meanwhile, Nasarawa United hopes of overtaking Akwa United may have gone up in flames after losing 3-2 to Lobi Stars at the Aper Aku stadium, Benue

The away side had a dream start when Silas Nwankwo opened the scoring in the 3rd minute but Lobi’s Samuel Mathias equalized in the 19th minute.

Eight minutes later, Nwankwo scored again to make it 2-1 but it what seemed like a goal-scoring competition, Mathias again equalized in the 30th minute to make it 2-2.

As the first half was about to end, Lobi’s Austin Ogunye scored his side third goal in the 42nd minute which proved to be the winning goal.

In the same vein, Kano Pillars also failed to mount a challenge as they lost 2-0 to a ten-man Enugu Rangers at The Cathedral.

Christian Nnaji had put his side in an early lead just five minutes into the game while Eso Archibong made it 2-0 and killed any hopes of Pillars doing a comeback.

In other games played, Abia Warriors defeated Heartland FC 2-1 while Rivers United lost by the same scoreline to Jigawa Golden Stars.

In Lagos, MFM FC overpowered Plateau United with an emphatic 3-1 victory while Sunshine Stars dropped down into the relegation zone following a 0-0 draw with Katsina United.

Meanwhile, action continues tomorrow when Dakkada FC hosts relegation-threatened Adamawa United as Enyimba will fancy a victory over IfeanyiUbah to claim the second spot while Kwara United battles Wikki Tourists.

As it stands, Akwa United has 64 points while Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars have 58 points each with Enyimba having garnered 57 points.
