NPFL21: Akwa United, Wikki Tourist share spoils in Uyo

Akwa United have been unable to secure a second league victory after being pegged to a 1-1 draw by visiting Wikki Tourists at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

The Match Day 5 clash of the ongoing 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League saw in-form Ndifreke Effiong opening the scoring for the home side in the 25th minute after benefiting from a poor clearance by the opposing goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali to pass the ball into an unguarded post for the opener.

The home side continued to search for the second goal and almost got the goal but Ikechukwu Nwani failed to double his side’s advantage from a one-to-one situation in the 36th minute.

Four minutes later, Akwa United paid for the miss as Wikki Tourist got the equalising goal through Chinedu Udeagha following brilliant teamwork with the assist coming from Nazifi Yahaya.

At the restart of the second half, the hosts withdrew Samuel Amadi and Ikechukwu Nwani for Charles Atshimene and Wisdom Fernando respectively in a bid to secure the maximum points.

Substitute Charles thought he had got his side in front again but the goal was chalked off for offside to the anguish of the team.

In the 70th minute, Wikki were close to getting the lead but for Akwa’s goalkeeper, Efal making a big save to deny Idris Guda in a one-on-one situation to ensure the game ends 1-1.

Akwa United have now dropped points twice at home this season while Wikki Tourists picked their first point on the road.

The Promise Keepers at the end of hostilities have moved to 12th position on the table with 6 points while Wikki remains on 16th position with 5 points.
