Akwa United three points from securing first-ever NPFL title

With just two games to go in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Akwa United are just three points away from lifting a first-ever league title.

The Promise Keepers consolidated their push towards the league title after they were held to a 1-1 draw by IfeanyiUbah on MatchDay 36 in Nnewi.

An outright win or a point in the game against MFM FC today at the Nest of Champions, Uyo will give them the league title for the first time in 24 years of their existence. They have also sealed continental football for next season.

The Kennedy Boboye-managed team are on 68 points from 36 matches, with a massive goal difference of +27 and with just four losses so far, the league title is definitely theirs to lose.

In the same vein, Nasarawa United who maintained their second spot on the log but improved to 62 points are also hunting for their own first league title in 18 years of their existence,

The Bala Nikyu’s team can lay stake to the title if Akwa United lose their match today and they win theirs against Rangers International on matchday 37 in Lafia to drag the race to the final day.

Similarly, Enyimba who are currently placed third on the table with 62 points can leapfrog Nasarawa United if they lose their game Rangers while they win theirs against Sunshine Stars who will do everything to avoid a drop into the relegation zone.

Kano Pillars who have had a disappointing season are placed fourth with 61 points will not win this league even if they win the remaining games starting with Wikki Tourist before playing Heartland on the final day.

However, the ‘Masu Gida’ will look to displace either Nasarawa United or Enyimba and secure a continental spot.

In other games today, a relegated Adamawa United will battle Kwara United while Rivers United will seek maximum points to stand a chance of a continental ticket when they clash against Lobi Stars.

Jigawa Golden Stars will welcome IfeanyiUbah while Abia Warriors will be guests to Katsina United.

Plateau United will also welcome Dakkada FC in Jos while Warri Wolves will trade tackles with visiting Heartland FC at home.
