Akwa United have come out tops in the battle for the top position of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 2-1 victory over second-placed Nasarawa United on Thursday evening at the Nest of Champions.
The Promise Keepers who are looking to win their first-ever league title went in search of an early goal and in the process, Ikechukwu Nwani misses a sitter from 10 yards in the 10th minute.
Being a top-of-the-table clash, the visitors were not going to sit back as they equally forced Akwa Utd keeper, Adewale to make a smart fingertip save to deny Silas Nwankwo.
In the 30th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock as Samuel Amadi curled in a freekick from 20 yards to put Akwa United ahead.
As the first half was coming to an end, Akwa doubled their lead with Marshall Johnson heading Etboy Akpan’s corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper, Galadima.
At the restart of the second half, the momentum was maintained by both sides as they fought to claim the top spot.
The visitors were able to reduce the deficit in the 77th minute after Adamu Hassan scored from the spot and efforts to get the equalizing goal failed with the game ending 2-1.
Following this victory, Akwa United have earned 56 points from 30 games to top the table while Nasarawa have 52 points from the same number of games played.
