Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has acknowledged that he is ready to fight for the no 1 shirt at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Interim Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen, included four goalkeepers in his final 28-man squad for the AFCON with Akpeyi, Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and Enyimba’s John Noble slugging it out for the Eagles first choice position.
Akpeyi was the first-choice goalkeeper at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt and was in goal for five of the seven games, while Uzoho and Ezenwa played one game apiece.
However, the introduction of Sparta Rotterdam keeper Maduka Okoye to the squad, Akpeyi has been relegated the rest to the bench.
But with the appointment of Eguavoen to lead the team at the AFCON, the goalkeepers have been battling to claim the starting spot in Cameroon.
Akpeyi, who has been impressive for South African side Kaizer Chiefs this season, said the competition was good for the team, adding that he would back anyone picked as first choice.
“It’s a good development (clean slate for every player). Maduka has been doing so well, Uzoho and Noble have been good as well, we are all working hard for the spot but most importantly, whichever one the coach decides to play at the end of the day, every other person will have to support him.
“Everyone is in top form at the moment and I’m going to support them if I don’t get my chance.”
