As it has been in the past, lowly rated clubs often dubbed ‘Giant Killers’ have once again shown their intent to match up with the superior powerplay of their opponents in the 2021 Aiteo Cup.
Premier League side, Lobi Stars chances of securing a continental ticket has been shattered following a 2-0 loss to Bayelsa United in the round of 16 of the 2021 Aiteo Cup.
Bayelsa’s Emo James opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Okardi Inikurogba ended any hope of Lobi Stars getting a positive result in the 45th minute at the Dan Anyian stadium Owerri.
It will be noted that the only clash between both sides prior to this game was during the Governor Nyesom Wike Pre-season Tournament last year in Port Harcourt when the Bayelsans emerged as the only club that beat the Ortom boys in the semi-finals of the tournament.
In the other results, Nasarawa United defeated Plateau United 3-1 while Kano Pillars overcame Kebbi United 3-2 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 in regulation time.
Another Premier League side, Wikki Tourist succumbed to another giant killer, Gateway United 4-3 on penalties after the game also ended 0-0 in regulation time.
Niger Tornadoes also defeated Abia Warriors 3-2 just as Sunshine Stars overcame Green Beret 5-4 on penalties.
Similarly, Rivers United defeated Heartland FC 2-1 while Katsina United lost 5-4 to Gombe United on penalties after the game had 1-1 during the regulation time.
Meanwhile, Gateway Utd will face Bayelsa United in the quarter-finals while defending champions, Kano Pillars will seek to dislodge Sunshine Stars for a semi-final berth.
Rivers United have been paired against Niger Tornadoes while Nasarawa United will trade tackle with Gombe United.
