Adamawa United FC chairman knocks LMC over possible league restart

The chairman of Adamawa United Football Club Emmanuel Zira has said the planned restart of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season was uncalled for while urging the League Management Company (LMC) not to toy with the lives of players and club officials by re-opening the league, the SportsBay.com reports.

COVID-19 has infected more than 7,000 people and claimed 211 lives in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation of 200 million inhabitants.

“I want all stakeholders to prevail on LMC not to re-open the league because they will be exposing everyone to serious risk. It is too early to rush back.

“The German Bundesliga has resumed because they will lose so much money if they don’t resume. The English Premier League and LaLiga are also planning to resume because they will lose money from sponsors.

“Our case is different. We don’t have to risk precious lives because we want to do what others are doing,” he said.

Zira, whose club, Adamawa United, are threatened with relegation from Nigeria’s top division, said his concern was the health and safety of players and officials.

NPFL players to undergo COVID-19 test when season resumes “It’s not football. I’m not even thinking of football now. Only the living can play football, the dead cannot,” he said.

“Rather we should support the government to defeat this pandemic and not aid its spread.”

The league was suspended on March 18 following the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria, but organisers plan to finish the competition within 10 weeks once they get the government’s approval to do so.

They said 1,200 players and officials will be tested for the virus before they can resume action.

Adamawa United are bottom of the top tier and, with 13 rounds of matches still to be played, look certain to return to the second division.

Plateau United topped the standings with 46 points from 25 matches before the league was suspended.
