NPFL21: Abia Warriors secure first league victory

Abia Warriors have finally secured their first league victory in the ongoing 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League by defeating visiting Sunshine Stars 4-1 at the Okigwe Township Stadium.

The Imama Amapakabo side have been without a win in the last seven games took the game to their opponents which is the club’s longest winless run in the top division

In the 6th minute, diminutive midfielder, Daniel Wotlai had the very first attempt on goal for his side to show their opponents the intention to end the losing streak.

Their efforts paid off in the 16th minute when Fatai Abdullahi curled in a beautiful free-kick to open the scoring.

Four minutes later, Abia Warriors doubled the lead through Emmanuel Ugwuka when he headed the ball into an open net.

Buoyed by the lead, the home side attempted to increaser the leas when in the 32nd minute, defender Adekunle Adeleke broke out in a counter but his effort hit the woodwork as the first half ended 2-0.

At the restart of the second half, Sunshine Stars sought to get back into the game and were duly rewarded in the 63rd minute through Sadeeq Yusuf who scored his 6th goal in 7 appearances. He tops the race for the Eunisell golden boot.

In a bid to avoid dropping points, Amapakabo made some changes in the personnel in the 66th minute and Bello Lukman who was one of the substitutes rose high and headed in Mustapha Jibreel cross from a corner kick to make it 3-1.

Lukman again repaid the faith the coach had in him as he got a brace for his side in the 78th minute as the game ended 4-1.

In other games, Adamawa Utd remain winless as they lost 1-0 to Akwa Utd while Enugu Rangers trumped Dakkada FC 3-0.

Kano Pillars secured maximum points by defeating Jigawa Golden Stars 2-0 while Lobi Stars lost 2-1 to Kwara Utd to extend their unbeaten run to 6 games to go into 3rd place.

High flying Nasarawa Utd lost 2-1 to a 10-man Enyimba at home while Warri Wolves narrowly defeated Plateau Utd and Wikki Tourist secured maximum victory over MFM FC.

However, Enyimba has climbed to top of the table with 18 points while Rivers Utd, though with a game outstanding are second with 15 points.
